ARE ALL CLOTH NAPPIES MADE EQUAL ?
AREN'T they mostly just "re-branded" ALVA nappies anyway ?
Short answer: Definitely not. Cloth nappies, be it Pockets, All-in-one's, All-in-two's, Covers etc, are not all made in one factory far away over the sea.
Due to the limitations of available fabric options and manufacturing capabilities here in S.A, we at BiddyKins decided to bring in samples from several different manufacturers to compare quality. Visually the nappies from the various manufacturers appeared very similar, (some even with exactly the same pattern on the outside) so we set about conducting our own nappy quality test: We tested the waterproof quality of the nappies by adding liquid in measured quantities testing them for ‘leaks’, we tested how much liquid the accompanying inserts could absorb, we compared the quality of the leg gussets and the quality of the stitching. Using the nappies in a real world environment over several years - we have even evaluated how the nappies hold up over time.
The results may surprise some moms.... some manufacturers performed significantly better than others, despite 'identical' appearance on the outside. Despite similar leg gussets, closer inspection revealed what we believe are significant differences in the quality of the stitching - and how close the 'gathering' is. Even the overall size of the nappies vary slightly - don't forget that nappies are intended to last till potty training - a nappy that is slightly smaller - IS slightly smaller and this becomes more noticeable as the little one gets bigger, and additional inserts are added.
Manufacturers who failed our leak tests were quickly removed from our list of suppliers, so too were manufacturers who took shortcuts in the overall size of the nappy and the quality of the stitching and leg gussets...
Based on our test results we were able to choose only the best performing nappies to be branded as BiddyKins nappies.

Unfortunately, here in SA there appears to be a bit of a perception that all similar looking nappies are "Alva" nappies. This is NOT the case. In fact, by far the majority of online retailers in SA do NOT carry (or "rebrand") Alva nappies.
